Notable people
[edit]I thought that this should be notable people (by definition).
There is quite a few red wikilink entries here, so I'm not sure why there are in the list. I'm considering tidying this list by removing the red wikilink entries.
Is there anything I should consider before doing this? (In most cases the 'Notability' column includes such reasons as 'actor' and 'college student' that don't seem reason enough for the entry to stay.)
Thanks. peterl (talk) 07:40, 3 July 2016 (UTC)
- There was a notable TV reporter for CNN who was killed in a head-on collision near Atlanta, the home city of the headquarters of CNN. He was very prominent in the field of reporting on science, technology, and engineering, and I was looking here to refresh my memory about his name. However, searching through you list by computer give NO matches for reporter or CNN.47.215.211.115 (talk) 03:46, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- According to Google, that might be John Holliman in 1998. Was that him? Akld guy (talk) 03:58, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- The name John Holliman surely rings a bell, and his article should say something about the manner of his death. I have close ties to Atlanta and to Science & Technology because I earned my master's degree in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech. The HQ of CNN was on "Techwood Drive" close to Georgia Tech, and maybe it still is. Mr. Holliman was sometimes called the successor to Jules Bergman of NBC-TV in the span and quality of his reporting. 47.215.211.115 (talk) 04:05, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- You may go ahead and enter John Holliman into the article. If you're unwilling or don't consider yourself experienced enough, please indicate here and I'll enter him for you. Not trying to be officious; I'm simply offering you the courtesy of doing it first. Akld guy (talk) 04:12, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

- I was trying to put some emphasis on the concept of Notable People, such as people who make their careers in broadcasting, et cetera, and are known to millions.
Duane Allman and Charles "Pete" Conrad were both killed in motorcycle accidents, and Allman was on a public street, so do they count? Pete Conrad was the third man to walk on the moon, the commander of Apollo 12, and the commander of the first crew to visit the Skylab. Conrad was injured in a motorcycle accident, and some hours later he died of internal bleeding due to poor medical care at the emergency room. Internal bleeding was something that should have been checked on intensively;47.215.211.115 (talk) 04:59, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- These members of the Baseball Hall of Fame are not even mentioned here: Mel Ott was involved in an auto accident in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi, in 1958. He was transferred to a hospital in New Orleans, where he died one week later. Mr. Ott died in a similar manner to two other Hall of Famers from the New York Giants (baseball): Frankie Frisch in 1973 and Carl Hubbell in 1988, with the latter death 30 years to the day after Mr Ott's death. If this article is going to be worth very much, you need to pay attention to things like the Sports Hall of Fames and the reporters of CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, BBC, and CBC. Those are automatically Notable People, and in fact VIPs.47.215.211.115 (talk) 04:00, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- Mel Ott was the first National Leaguer to hit 500 home runs, and he hit 511 in his career. It wasn't until years later when he was passed by such sluggers as Eddie Matthews, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Willie McCovey. The latter two were Giants, too, though they played a lot in San Francisco as well as in New York. Ott finished with 511, and interestingly, Eddie Matthews and Ernie Banks both quit at 512. McCovey is tied with Ted Williams and another player at 521.47.215.211.115 (talk) 04:15, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- Mel Ott already appears in the list. I have entered John Holliman. Akld guy (talk) 04:54, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- The name "Mel Ott" still does not appear in a computer search of the text (done by Windows) on this page. This is the simplest and most obvious way to search a page for certain words or a word. I do it all the time.47.215.211.115 (talk) 05:05, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- I have now entered Frankie Frisch and Carl Hubbell. Akld guy (talk) 05:19, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- Duane Allman and Charles "Pete" Conrad already appear in the list. It seems you have some kind of problem with the search function in your browser. Please check the list by sight before suggesting "missing" names that you can't find using that function. Akld guy (talk) 05:43, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- Notable in the Wikipedia context are all those who have an article already, or meet the notability threshold for having an article at some point. Red links are therefore not a fundamental problem, but context needs to be given in that case (either through a blue link, or a reference, or preferably both) why they are notable. - Some of those you're proposing do not have Wikipedia articles, so they might not qualify as notable people. Also, as per the criteria, athletes performing in closed-road events do not qualify and it's impossible for those of us whose only language is English to check some of the references. Please check and remove any proposed entries that don't qualify. Thanks. Akld guy (talk) 20:30, 16 November 2016 (UTC)
TOC
[edit]Having a TOC and the ability to jump to the first letter of the surname is all very well, but it means we can only sort within that letter, rendering all the sorts essentially useless. Does anyone object to my removing the TOC sort facility, and putting everything into one table? Edwardx (talk) 22:52, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
- No objection. It might be an opportunity to get the columns consistent too. Some start with birth date, others with nationality. Do you realize you will have to do all that work too? Akld guy (talk) 23:25, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you, Akld guy. This was the first time I'd seen this list, and hadn't spotted the column (in)consistency issue. I'm more of a content creator than a list fixer-upper, so regrettably, I'm going to have to pass on this one! Anyone else up for it? Edwardx (talk) 00:05, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Not me, but sometime when I get time I'll fix all the column inconsistencies. Anyone else, go ahead in the meantime. Akld guy (talk) 00:46, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- I copied the tables into an external spreadsheet to verify that the columns were consistent. It looks like they were fixed previously. I removed the table breaks and consolidated the table. Please roll back or amend if I made an error. I also left it as Surname sorted, but the column is full name still. So if you sort it, it becomes impossible to return to that sort. It looks good to me, but let me know if we should add a "surname" column for sorting. MMarkowski (talk) 04:05, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

Rename article?
[edit]A recent edit was this, which added the death of Pietro Ferrero Jr. Ferrero died after falling from his bicycle and it is unclear from sources whether he died of injuries sustained or whether he suffered a medical event and fell and died of natural causes. It's clear that no collision was involved. I have decided to not challenge the entry, but this raises the question: Is the name of the article appropriate? Should we rename it "List of people who died in traffic accidents"? Akld guy (talk) 23:01, 28 July 2017 (UTC)
- Support. I've been following this article for a while now. I believe 'collisions' implies that the was an object involved, such as a stationary object on the road or another vehicle. 'Accidents' is a more fitting title to account for a death of any public road user which would normally be included in a nations road toll. I also believe this article is getting ridiculously long, is there any support for splitting the list into sub lists? Ajf773 (talk) 23:47, 28 July 2017 (UTC)
- Support, as per reasons given by Ajf773. The list was sorted into alphabetical listings (A's, B's, C's, etc) until this edit on 23 May, only a couple of months ago. It was the result of the discussion in the "TOC" section (above) of this Talk page. I now think it was a retrograde step. Akld guy (talk) 02:12, 29 July 2017 (UTC)

Listing by alphabetical sections
[edit]I have reverted the list to an alphabetical section format. It was changed to a single long listing several months ago because of a complaint that searches returned no hits. Since then, the list has grown considerably and it has become difficult to edit. My opinion is now that it's difficult to justify why someone would be doing a wiki search for the contents of a list. If someone runs a search in the Wikipedia search box for a particular name, why would he/she expect to find a result in this list? It doesn't make sense, so I think the advantage of having the list in alphabetical sections outweighs any dubious search feature. Akld guy (talk) 20:41, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
- Support this change. It just became one big messy table. Ajf773 (talk) 02:07, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
- Seems like a list sorting by year/decade makes more sense. 68.55.175.136 (talk) 21:46, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

I'm seeking consensus for this move. Reason: some of the deaths were the result of single vehicle accidents where the vehicle ran off the road and there was no other traffic around. Traffic implies lanes of vehicles, or at least congestion. The proposed name seems more comprehensive than the current one. If the move was made, the current name and the redirect would simply swap states. @Metosay: and @Ajf773:, do you have an opinion or suggestions? Akld guy (talk) 07:06, 27 April 2019 (UTC)
- Support. I support renaming the article to "road accidents". The inclusion criteria should be based on a fatality that occurred on public vehicle carriageways. Cross-categorising specific collision details is unnecessary. I also give support for splitting the article into sub-articles alphabetically by surname to avoid the article becoming too large. Ajf773 (talk) 06:40, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose Sorry, but this is one of my (professional) pet hates. As a transport planner, I would like to see the term "accident" banned. The appropriate term to use is either "crash" or "incident". See this move request for my rationale. I acknowledge that the move request did not proceed but that does not change my view on the matter. Schwede66 23:28, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
- Comment This needs to go through a formal move request for wider input. Schwede66 23:28, 5 May 2019 (UTC)

Not fine
[edit]@User:Ajf773 The wording was not fine at all. Do cars drive themselves, or are they driven by people? It is best to describe "all human actors in collisions neutrally, such as “driver and pedestrian in collision”, rather than, say, “pedestrian hit by car”, which research shows unintentionally shifts focus to the only named human actor, and implicitly attaches a degree of blame." The tendency to say that a "car hit a pedestrian" is dehumanizing and offensive, including towards the unmentioned human driving the vehicle. More than that, it is simply inaccurate. Bohemian Baltimore (talk) 10:54, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
- That article you posted is an essay on journalism best practice so it doesn't have any bearing in Wikipedia. One of the policies in Wikipedia is to present a neutral point of view so we do NOT imply blame. It is factually correct to state that a person dies as a result from a collision by a vehicle as it is the force of the moving object that results in their death. The exception would apply if a particular reference specifically distinguishes drivers from vehicles. I would like to hear other users thoughts, but please leave as it until a clear consensus is made. Ajf773 (talk) 20:49, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
